General Practice in the Czech Republic

General Practice/Family Medicine is divided in our country into paediatric care and practical medicine. This situation appeared just after second world war and the system of paediatric care is so functional until now, that there is major tendency to save this system. General practitioners are working on the regional basis - clients are usually people living in the surrounding area of the practice. Patients can choose their general practitioner.

General practitioners have the basic and main role in the Primary Health Care system in the Czech Republic

Educational system of advanced studies for physicians in the Czech Republic

Medical students are not specialized during their basic six years University studies. All the students have to pass four weeks practical training in the office of the general practitioner. After finishing the practical part the student continues in theoretical workshops at the Department of General Practice where particular subjects are discussed. After graduation young physicians interested in general practice are admitted to the "Institute for further medical education". He or she has to go through two and half years cycle consisting of the following stages:

3. pediatrics
   
4. infectious diseases
   
5. neurology
   
6. dermatovenerology
   
7. ophthalmology
   
8. otorhinolaryngology
   
9. gynecology
   
10. psychiatric department
    
11. hygienic department
    
12. emergency
    
13. general practitioner
    

After passing the general practice examination the physician obtains the professional license. Every physician must become member of Medical Chamber, For successful start of his or her practice the contract with one or several health insurance companies must be negotiated.
